Introduction
"Wondo, Story of the two Designers" is an exhibition organized to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the two craftsmen, Choe Jeong-ho and Choe Jeong-sun, who created the original drawings, Wondo, for the Korean script - Hangeul. This special exhibition celebrates the lives and achievements of the two inventors, who by diagramming the typographic features of the Hangeul, helped to elevate the beauty and innovative functionality of the Korean written language. The two designers exercised dexterity to mold and refine what became the fonts, Batang, Dodum, and others, which formed the foundation of Korean letter types.
The purpose of this exhibition is to retrace the journey of these two remarkable men who kept in step with the rapidly developing printing technology, and continued to create new and improved Korean typefaces. In addition, we will shed light on the history of modern typeface-making technology as well as type design in Korea.
Part 1 will introduce the transformation of printing technology during the 1950s to the 1960s, which is when the two men were most active in typeface design and development; consequently, wondo, which played a central role during this transformation, will be highlighted. Part 2 will delve deeper into the lives and the works of Choe Jeong-ho and Choe Jeong-sun.
