Introduction

The 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang is the first Winter Olympiad hosted by the Republic of Korea. To commemorate the historic occasion, the National Hangeul Museum presents this special exhibition, “Winter’s Literary Journey.” It introduces 454 works of literature set in winter from all of the Winter Olympic host countries, from France, the first venue in 1924, to China which will host the 24th Winter Olympics in 2022.

The exhibition thus follows the historical journey of the Winter Olympics, starting from European nations, then to North America and onward to China, Japan and Korea in East Asia, exploring the realities of life and sentiments of people in each country as depicted or described in their winter-framed literature.

Part One, “Winter Pilgrimages,” features winter poems and novels from the 13 Winter Olympic host countries. Ten languages are represented, providing an opportunity to glimpse the unique emotions and sensibilities expressed in their representative works of literature. Part Two, “Winter Encounters,” is devoted to the great children’s classics from around the world and Korean children’s literature, offering a glimpse of the innocent world of children as pure as snow. Winter says farewell to a year and ushers in the next year. It is as harsh as a blizzard, but is also as clean and pure as the first snowfall. It is a cold and bitter season for some people, but also recalls warm memories in the minds of others. Coldness and warmth coexist in winter, a season of contrasting emotions and memories, of light and darkness. Now, let us start our journey to experience the diverse sensibilities and values inspired by winter through winter literature from around the world.

  • PART ONE   Winter Pilgrimages
On a snowy winter day, in a spotless white snowfield,
Along the fantastic routes created by winter in literary works,
An exciting journey begins to meet with poems and novels from 13 nations.

Winter in Europe, where the snow-covered Alps create breathtaking scenery, offers time for introspection. Winter in Northern Europe, blessed by the awe-inspiring spectacles of aurora, embraces both incandescence and murk, and ardor and dispassion. Winter in Eastern Europe, cutting through vast fields, leads to a mysterious world of imagination. Winter in North America, with the Rocky Mountains forming its spine, conjures up the love of family. Winter in East Asia, familiar to us Koreans, is cold and tough but harbors hope for spring that is returning. Thus, winter literature of different countries enriches us with varied imagery and sensibilities.
